The Photo Museum in Osby
The trade name MEKANIK belongs to HEDBERGS VERKSTÄDER (workshop) in Osby wich from the year 1948 manufactured metal building boxerrs at Hedberg´s workshop in Osby and Tyringe. The manufacturing started after an idea bt Axel Hedberg from his childhood acquaintance with the English "Meccano".
Hedbergs wanted to make a more educational series of boxes and developed even new details and constructed all the machines for the new production themselves.
All details were precision constucted with a tolerance of 1/1000 mm and the ball bearings held Swedish industrial standard.
MEKANIK is even compatible with other brands. In 1948 after the war there was no import of other metal building boxes. Therefore Hedberg´s boxes got off to a great start. In the beginning of 1950 fifteen men worked in 3 shifts. The production was about 15.000 boxes per year. 17 different boxes were made. The production ceased in 1958.
Towards the end of the 50´s there was also Mekanik model train. It was the Austrian Liliput wich was sold on the Swedish market by Hedbergs Verkstäder under the name Mekanik. A small train track is even part of the exhibit.
So far the Mekanik material from the Photo Museum has a traveling exhibit been used at 12 different museums in Malmö and Jönköping during the yeaars 1993-1996. It is introduced with a backgound of about 20 other brands of building blocks both older and younger. |
